About the Event

The Creative Industries Safety Passport

The well-established health & safety course from BECTU has now been re-designed for online delivery via Zoom.

What is the Creative Industries Safety Passport?

The Creative Industries Safety Passport is a one-day health & safety course designed specifically for workers, employed or freelance, working in film, TV, theatre and live events. It promotes a safety culture based on personal responsibility for safety. This means that it encourages delegates to be pro-active in their own safety and the safety of others.

The course is approved by the Institution of Occupational Safety & Health (IOSH) under their Passport scheme which is a nationally recognised scheme and follows The Health & Safety Executive (HSE) syllabus guidelines as well Creative Skillset’s National Occupational Standards in Health & Safety X2, X3 and X3.5 and the BECTU/UK Theatre Code of Conduct for Get-in/ Get-outs. It is a level 2 qualification that is valid for 3 years and comes with a workbook pdf and IOSH certificate. All Safety Passport holders are registered on the IOSH central database so verification is an easy process.

With so many employers asking for proof of health and safety training BECTU is providing an approved qualification that is relevant to creative industries workers.

What is the course content?

The course was redesigned in 2020 and covers the basics a delegate needs in health & safety as well as focusing on specific hazards that come up in the creative industries. It is regularly updated to reflect the working environment, which will include measures to able to return to work during the COVID - 19 situation.

The course is split into 4 modules with breaks in between:

  • Introducing creative industry safety; this covers why health & safety matters, health & safety legislation, duties of employees, self-employed and contractors under the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974, what is a health & safety policy and insurance
  • Defining hazard and risk; this covers risk assessments, hazards and risks, competence, risk matrix, controlling risk, what is reasonably practicable, dynamic risk assessments & risk perceptions
  • Hazards and practical control measures; this covers electricity, display screen equipment, working at height, specific location hazards, welfare, confined spaces, manual handling, slips and trips, work equipment, hazardous substances, asbestos, noise, personal hygiene, driving, drones, violence, terrorist threats, bullying, stress, mental health, alcohol & drugs and fire
  • Improving safety performance; this covers health & safety in the workplace, the construction phase, keeping people safe in the workplace, working time, personal protective equipment (PPE), signs and signals, first aid, health surveillance, accidents, accident reporting, safety representatives & safety inspectors.

The course uses a mix of teaching styles, including video and discussion to enhance the learning experience. Delegates can bring real issues and near miss incidents to increase the relevance of the course. All the trainers are IOSH accredited and have a wealth of knowledge and experience working in the creative industries.

The course has a two-part online assessment, the first part has twenty questions, mainly multiple choice with a maximum mark of 40 and the second is practical application learning which requires spotting hazards and providing measures to reduce the risk, with a maximum 16 marks on offer. To be eligible to receive a passport you must achieve 24 marks or over on the first part and 10 marks or over on the second part. A total minimum pass mark of 34 is required.

For the assessments, a link will be sent to you to complete the assessments; the first for the practice test with 5 minutes to complete, the second for assessment part A with 20 minutes to complete and the third for assessment Part B with 15 minutes to complete. Each assessment has a time window allotted to access the assessment, it will only be available for the day and time of the training. The assessments have to be completed not using the workbook or web search aids while the video camera is on and can be monitored by the tutor under exam conditions. You will receive your mark on completion of each assessment.

For any student requiring any reasonable adjustments to completing the assessments, an extra 5 minutes per assessment can be requested.
