Becoming a Grip Trainee

At the Grips Branch, we uphold the highest standards of training and professionalism. A career as a Grip is a dedicated path that demands skill, commitment, and an unwavering focus on safety—not simply a stepping stone to other departments.

Is a Career as a Grip Right for You?

If you’re considering this profession, a great first step is to gain hands-on experience as a runner on Film & TV sets. This role will give you an up-close view of what a Grip does, allowing you to:

  • Observe Grips at work

  • Ask questions to deepen your understanding of the role

  • Build connections within the industry, including finding a Certified Proposer—a qualified Grip who can support your application

This foundational experience will help you decide if the path of a Grip aligns with your skills and career goals.

There are strict criteria that you need to meet before becoming a Grip trainee.

  • Must have a passion for Film and TV.

  • Must be over 19 years of age.

  • Must be a member of the BECTU. (Click here to join)

  • Must have a Certified Proposer (qualified Grip to support your application.)

  • Must adhere to the Code of Conduct.

Embrace a Step-by-Step Learning Journey

In this profession, it’s essential to “walk before you run.” Honesty about your skill level and experience is crucial for your safety and the safety of others. Here are some guidelines for a successful start:

  • Be Authentic About Your Skills: Avoid overselling yourself; overconfidence can lead to accidents. The film set is a fast-paced environment where skills are tested daily.

  • Balance Confidence and Caution: While confidence is key, avoid tipping into overconfidence. Staying grounded will allow you to learn safely and progressively.

  • Prioritise Safety at All Times: Develop at your own pace, taking the time to fully grasp the core skills needed for each task. Safety is always the top priority on set.

By approaching your training with integrity, patience, and respect for the craft, you’ll build a solid foundation for a successful career as a Grip.
