Today marks the 80th Anniversary of VE Day—the moment peace returned to Europe after the devastation of the Second World War.
On this important day, we honour the courage, sacrifice, and resilience of all those who served, as well as those who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to rebuild our nation.
As a community, let's take a moment to remember their legacy, cherish our freedom, and reflect on the enduring value of unity and peace.
Thank you for publishing this Ian, and also we must remember VJ Day, which was the ending of the war in the Pacific on the 15th of August that year, 1945.
On another note as our ex treasurer Toby has pointed out, Victor Selwyn Hammond was born, but he was born on the 7th of May, not the 8th, (the original signing of the first unconditional surrender by Germany and the Allis. The second signing of this unconditional surrender on film with the Russians was May 8th.)
But Viktor was indeed named for that victory day. I look forward to seeing those of us that are left on Saturday at the Veterans lunch.
And it is also particularly poignant because 8th May 1945 is the day that our old friend Vic Hammond was born, hence his name Victor. He would’ve been 80 today of course bless him, sorely missed, never forgotten.
