Harry Eckford: 18th April 1939 – 28th December 2024

We are saddened to share the passing of veteran grip, Harry Eckford, a respected colleague and friend, on 28th December 2024.

Harry began his career as a Stagehand at MGM. When it closed in 1970 he became a Standby Stagehand, working on films such as The Dark Crystal (1982). After 14 years as a Standby he became a highly skilled grip working on Gorillas in the Mist (1988), First Knight (1995) and My House in Umbria (2003). Known for his professionalism, humour, and camaraderie, he left a lasting mark on all who worked with him.

“Harry first worked with me when he was a standby stag, we continued to work together on several projects and he then went Gripping, and I'm happy to say we continued our work relationship. He was an excellent Stag and a very good Grip, also a great character with a very droll sense of humour. On a personal level for me to say I will miss him is an understatement, So RIP my old mate.” - Nick Pearson

Harry developed dementia in his later years, but faced it with great strength, supported by his devoted wife, Merilyn, and family. He will be remembered fondly for his contributions to our industry and the friendships he forged.

In the spring, Harry’s family will hold a celebration of his life, and we will share details when available. Rest in peace, Harry—you will be greatly missed.

I have been dreading this news. This man was a complete gentleman. So kind and so generous with his knowledge. In the early years of my career his guidance and advice, without exaggeration, gave shape, form and a path to me for my future in this industry. Life and death happens to us all but this is deeply saddening. Dear Harry, rest in peace. I do and will always behave and honour your advice and teachings. Thanking you for your guidance and kindness is too weak a sentence to honour what you did for me.
